['belək], Joseph-Pierre Hilaire, englischer Schriftsteller, * La Celle-Saint-Cloud (bei Paris) 27. 7. 1870, ✝ Guildford (County Surrey) 16. 7. 1953; seit 1902 britischer Staatsbürger; 1906-10 Parlamentsmitglied; befreundet mit G. K. Chesterton. Belloc verfocht in seinem reichen Schaffen kompromisslos den Katholizismus; v. a. deshalb ist er als Historiker (»Europe and the faith«, 1920; »A history of England«, 1925-31, 4 Bände) und Biograph (»Wolsey«, 1930; »Oliver Cromwell«, 1931, deutsch) umstritten. Seine Lyrik ist oft satirisch und witzig, seine Essays sind gewandt und geistreich (»On nothing«, 1908; »On everything«, 1909; »A conversation with a cat«, 1931, deutsch »Gespräche mit einer Katze«). Belloc schrieb auch Reisebücher (»The cruise of the Nona«, 1925; deutsch »Kreuzfahrt der Nona«) und Verse für Kinder (»The bad child's book of beasts«, 1896).
